Evans Gallery: FIBER 3D- Revolutions
This celebrates the work of three extraordinary fiber artists: Brecia
Kralovic-Logan (from Santa Barbara), Deborah Jarchow (from Simi
Valley) and Gerri Johnson-McMillin (from Pt. Hueneme). These artists
explore the three dimensional form using fiber techniques and materials
in new innovative ways. This is a continuation of the 2008 exhibition
at the Syd Entrels Gallery in Tampa Bay, FL.
O'Keefe Gallery: Focus on Fiber II - Fiber
Open
This is a national juried exhibition open to all fiber
media, from traditional to contemporary to experimental in forms
such as weaving, basketry, sculpture, felting, papermaking, beading,
knitting and embroidery. It is juried by one of the most distinguished
figures in the international fiber community, Carol Sauvion. Ms.
Sauvion is the Peabody Award winning, Emmy nominated creator and
co-executive producer of Craft In America, a three-part documentary
series that aired nationwide on PBS in May 2007 and is set to air
again this year. In 1980 Carol founded and still is the director
of Freehand Gallery in Los Angeles.
About the judging process, Sauvion writes, "My first viewing
of the submissions for Fiber Open was pure pleasure. The technical
excellence of each piece is testament to the quality of the fiber
arts today. There were numerous techniques represented in the work
and I strove to include all the different media and techniques."

exhibition juried by Charlotte Bird. Charlotte is an award winning
artist who has enjoyed exhibitions at the Mingei International Museum
in San Diego and is on the Board of Directors of Quilt Visions and
chaired the 2008 juried international exhibition at the Oceanside
Museum of Art. Her work has been featured in national publications
including Kate Lenkowsky's recent Contemporary Quilt Art and on

About the judging process, Charlotte Bird writes, "All the
work submitted tackled the composition issues creatively and more

the compositions which felt most resolved were selected. Interesting
and well executed uses of techniques were selected".

Gerd Koch Gallery: Houses for Nomads
This is an exhibition of tapestries by Michael Rohde (from Westlake
Village). The tapestries come from a month-long trip Michael took
to the remote grasslands of Tibet, where the old ways are rapidly
changing, with roads being built, grazing pastures being fenced,
and houses being built to settle the nomadic peoples. "I use
the tools of making tapestries to observe and comment on what I
see," writes Rohde, "These observations come from news
of world events, travels and study of ancient and traditional art
forms. Recent tapestries over the last several years have addressed
the impact of human and natural causes on the homes and lives of
people. These include houses that disappear into the sands of war,
are filled with rising flood waters, or simply vanish as the natural
consequence of time."
Without the foreknowledge of the artist's intent, the tapestries
stand as objects of quiet beauty. The artist mixes his own dyes
to create beautiful yarn palettes of wool, silk and linen.

SCIART West
Gallery Hours: Thur-Fri, 1:00-4:00 PM
May 16- July 10, 2009
Childrens' Art from The Boy's & Girl's Club of Greater Oxnard
and Port Hueneme
Opening Reception:
Saturday, May 16th, 1pm - 3pm
SCIART West is exhibiting the artwork made by children who benefit
from the programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Oxnard
and Port Hueneme. Cecilia Salisbury, the Art Director of the The
Club, contacted SCIART about a collaboration and finding artists
who would like the idea of making art with the children. She also
mentioned her hopes of exhibiting the artwork.

SCIART West is doing both. Through a grant from the Martin V. &
Martha K. Smith Foundation we are funding artists to teach the children
and we are going to exhibit the artwork thanks to the support of
both Anne Oliver and the Smith Foundation.
The Boys & Girls Club helps youth reach their fullest potential
through a positive environment, lifelong learning and quality programs
dedicated to the arts, education, character and leadership development,
health and education.
SCIART West is a non-profit organization that is working to provide
the community with a cultural hub offering first-class art exhibitions
of both local as well as national artists, Meet the Artist programs,
four studio spaces for working artists, and workshops for all ages.
In keeping with our Mission Statement, as a charitable contribution
to the community, all programs are offered free of charge to students.
This exhibition and the Meet-The-Artist programs have been made
possible by a generous grant from the Martin V. & Martha K.
Smith Foundation.
The Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Foundation was established by
Martin V. "Bud" Smith and his wife Martha with the mission
"To enhance the quality of life for the residents of Ventura
County." Bud, the leading land and business developer in Ventura
County for more than 50 years, and his wife Martha hoped that the
Foundation would involve future generations of their family in continuing
their appreciation of Ventura County and their care and concern
for strengthening the community. Bud and Martha Smith's four daughters
serve on the board of the Foundation, with Marjorie Tegland currently
serving as Chair. Joining the Ventura County Community Foundation
as a support organization in 1994, the Martin V. & Martha K.
Smith Foundation funds nonprofits in Ventura County through an annual
grant program, with an emphasis on organizations serving the Oxnard
plain. Further details may be found on the VCCF website, at www.vccf.org.
The creation of SCIART West was made possible in part by The Downtown
Center for the Arts, a nonprofit organization involved with the
redevelopment of downtown Oxnard and the support of Handel and Carol
Evans.
